Start With Your Factory Tire Size
Your factory tire placard, usually located on the driver-side door jamb, gives you a dependable baseline. It lists the original tire size, recommended pressure, and load information selected by the vehicle manufacturer. For many drivers, staying close to that original overall tire diameter is the simplest path to predictable braking, speedometer accuracy, ride quality, and transmission behavior.
A tire size such as 275/65R18 breaks down into three useful measurements. The first number, 275, is the tire width in millimeters. The second number, 65, is the aspect ratio, meaning the sidewall height is 65 percent of the tire’s width. The final number, 18, is the wheel diameter in inches.
That sidewall number matters more than many people realize. A 275/65R18 and a 275/70R18 fit the same 18-inch wheel, but the 70-series tire is taller. Taller tires add ground clearance and fill the wheel well better, yet they can create clearance issues that the shorter tire never had.
Tire Fitment Guide: The Measurements That Matter
Tire size is only one part of fitment. The wheel determines where that tire sits in the wheel well, and small changes in wheel specifications can make a major difference.
Wheel Diameter and Width
Wheel diameter must match the tire’s required wheel diameter. An 18-inch tire fits an 18-inch wheel, period. But wheel width has a recommended range based on the tire size. This is why two trucks with the same tire size can have completely different clearance results. A 35-inch tire on the correct wheel may work well with a modest lift, while that same tire on a much wider, lower-offset wheel may rub during turns or suspension compression.
Bolt Pattern, Hub Bore, and Brake Clearance
A wheel must have the correct bolt pattern and properly seat on the hub. The center bore also matters. Some wheels are designed to be hub-centric, meaning the wheel centers on the vehicle hub. Others may require the correct hub-centric rings for a secure, vibration-free installation.
Brake clearance is another detail that cannot be guessed. Wheel spokes, barrel shape, and inner diameter all affect whether a wheel clears larger factory brakes or aftermarket brake upgrades. A wheel can share the right diameter and bolt pattern yet still contact a caliper. Professional test fitting prevents an expensive surprise after tires have already been mounted.
Choosing Tire Size for How You Drive

Larger tires, such as 33-, 35-, or 37-inch setups, are popular for trucks and SUVs built for presence and trail capability. They can increase ground clearance under the axles, but the trade-offs need to be planned. Larger, heavier tires can slow acceleration, extend braking distances, affect shift points, and reduce fuel economy. Lift Height Does Not Guarantee Clearance

The places that cause trouble are often the fender liner, front bumper bracket, mud flap, body mount, sway bar, or upper control arm.

A taller lift may solve one clearance problem but create other considerations involving alignment angles, driveshaft geometry, shock travel, and ride quality.

Do Not Skip Alignment and Tire Clearance Checks

It is especially important after changing ride height because camber, caster, and toe can move outside their ideal range.
A proper final inspection should include full-lock steering checks in both directions, suspension clearance verification, torqueing lug nuts to specification, and confirming tire pressure for the vehicle and load.
